Rally for Pedestrian Rights

Armenian (additional languages: Russian, English)
Yerevan for People

Rally for pedestrian rights in connection with the removal of two pedestrian crossings in Yerevan and general problems of pedestrian infrastructure in the city.

Background

The city authorities removed two pedestrian crossings in the Pokr Kentron area: at the intersections of Mashtots - Moskovyan and Mashtots - Isahakyan streets. They removed the markings ('zebra'), signs, and traffic lights. From now on, pedestrians need to step onto the roadway and wait for the traffic light three times (instead of once as before). The risks increase if the person is less mobile, accompanying a less mobile person or a child.

Insufficient control over the enforcement of safety standards for pedestrians by city authorities and/or police.

Goals
  • Draw the attention of authorities and the public to pedestrian safety issues, their needs, and rights. In particular, highlight the problem of removing pedestrian crossings in Yerevan.

  • Restore the removed pedestrian crossings (Mashtots/Moskovyan and Mashtots/Isahakyan)

  • Create a pedestrian crossing at Abovyan/Isahakyan near Yeritasardakan metro station.

  • Establish cooperation between the city hall, transport department, experts, and the initiative group to address safety and mobility issues in the city.
